Not much. They are happy being near their owners. Owners will be happier if they took the time to teach their own words to the dog.
Then there comes food. I feed Purina pro plan and I think it’s $90 twice a month and I always keep an extra bag handy. Though I am taking classes at UC Davis Vet to learn how to cook for them as I believe processed foods are not good for dogs. But I get it. Kibble is convenient.
Just don’t follow bag instructions as these tend to overfeed them. Keep them lean as puppies. Do not give them too much protein when they are little so as not to tax their kidneys and pack too much weight. Their bones havent fused yet untill they are well over 2 years old. so no strenous activities and heavy weight.
Then there’s core vaccinations that’s probably $200 a year. Probiotics daily and glucosamine and chondroitin for joints. A good bed and access to clean water for drinking and that’s it.
They don’t need grooming. You don’t have to bathe them as they stay clean and dirt doesn’t stick to their coat. Once a month is fine but they can go months without it. Nails just need trimming and ears should be clean as well as wrinkles just a daily wipe. If you give them raw bone at least twice a month, they don’t need brushing. If you can’t brush their teeth, just wipe off their mouth and the inside after they eat so bacteria doesn’t build up. I don’t always do that though. The rest are just fluff.
They don’t need a fancy collar or clothes but it’s cute. But they do need training because they are big dogs. And most often people blame it on the big dogs even if the little ones are instigators.
And they are super protective of their humans. So they need to be socialized with other people, situations and places- meaning exposure to different stuff.
Dont yell at them, it hurts their feelings. They are more of catch more flies with honey type of dogs.
They are strong and you should use your brains more than your brawns with them because they will win if you rely on your physical strength. Thus the importance of training. Then they become smart and highly obedient. You will enjoy teaching them tricks.
Some of them are born with a special trait like knowing when people are sick. Just trust your dog. And all you need is love.
